Hawthorn (leaf and flower)

Hawthorn has always been linked to symbols such as purity and purification, but also protection. It has also been associated with the sexual act and virginity.

Hawthorn is also considered as the refuge of fairies. Sacred in Ireland, it is said to be a gateway to the Sidh as it often grows on burial mounds, crossroads and other thresholds to the Other World.

Wreaths of hawthorn flowers were offered to the fairies in Beltane to gain their favor. Legend also has it that if you sit under a hawthorn tree at Beltane, Litha or Samhain, you risk being bewitched by the fairies.
