When you say sesame, you almost automatically say Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves. The magic formula "Sesame, open up" is far from being insignificant. First of all, it represents a symbol linked to fertility, because thanks to its power, it opens the earth's belly at leisure, the secret doors of the cave in which the forty thieves store their wealth. In the same way, the seed, by vegetative mechanism, by opening, gives, if the ground and the conditions are favourable, all the generosity of the earth. It is a metaphor of the fertile and therefore nourishing seed, but also a magical phrase in the sense that, in front of closed doors, it allows us to understand that the secret access to a still invisible world is hidden. An infallible means of accessing something, "all it takes is a little magic word to open not only hearts, but the secret paths of the unconscious" (2) that lead to the cave of a thousand treasures contained within each of us.
In China, sesame is a symbol of longevity. It is also a symbol of fertility for the Chinese.
It is said that sesame is the creation of Yama, the god of death. Sesame is used in expiatory ceremonies as a purifier and symbol of immortality.
